Maemo Mapper for OS2008!

Posted in Applications at 10:26 am by Jonathan Greene

Meamo Mapper 2.2

Maemo Mapper 2.2 has been released and includes official support for the OS2008 platform!

It’s been a while since I’ve used Maemo Mapper to be honest and I really like what I see here. Setup is MUCH simpler and you can add additional mapping data services with a single click on start-up. POI can be downloaded very easily as well from the menu which is a very welcome addition.

I’m going to have to play more with route planning as this looks like a great and free option to the Wayfinder navigation subscription. Wayfinder still seems like a simpler (though slower and more expensive) option for point to point directions, but I love the idea of using Google Maps for my route planning…

libgdbm3 is missing in the 2008 build so can’t install. I am sure I could find else where but am using gprs when roaming so can’t afford to search too much!

@Will - I actually installed this on both my N810 and N800 … no issues and they are running different builds. I’ve been installing a lot of things so perhaps I’ve picked that file up elsewhere… though I don’t think so.

This is the first install of any app on to a clean install of the release of the 2008 beta from the maemo site. Just tried again same prob. Thanks for the note though.

I’ve had problems with Maemo Mapper 2.2 not recognizing the N810’s internal gps. The only way I get it working is to start the N810’s basic “maps” app to start the GPS, start Maemo Mapper, then close maps. Rather a nuisance. I still wish Nokia would have included Wayfinder Navigator and charged only for updates to Wayfinder map data. They would sell thousands more if they’d done so and sold the N810 in the nav system section of stores as well. Even adding a few bucks - going to $499.95 would have been fine as for me. My view is its their major blunder with the N810.

Then again, I find the N810’s gps so slow to acquire the satellites that I’m going to buy a bluetooth GPS and leave it on the car dash like with the N800. I may just buy another N800 and just leave it in the car.

I realize this is off the Maemo Mapper topic, but has anyone (particularly Thoughtfix…) heard with the Wayfinder Navigator N810 premium upgrade service is going to be available? When I try to purchase it, there’s just a message saying it will be available in December. I’m starting to wonder which year?

I have not had that problem but can say that an external GPS acquires the signal far more quickly than the internal.

@reefdiver I have not heard any news on the wayfinder update … it was working in my prototype… but I see the same coming soon as you on the N800 with OS2008. Perhaps when the OS is officially released, not just as beta.

What gives with Maemo Mapper not working with the internal GPS of the N810? Why doesn’t it, and why hasn’t someone fixed the software, or created a software fix for it. Seems stupid to have to run Map in order to get Maemo Mapper to work..

Don’t you just have to have GPSD running in order for it to find the gps? Seems there should be a way to make that run without starting the builtin Map app.

It works . Set the bluetooth to blank and it will pick the internal device.

I have not been able to get my internal GPS working with it. I have not tried the “start maps and after the signal, start MMaps and quit maps”
