Native Multi-protocol IM with Internet Communications Software Update 2

Posted in Applications, Internet at 11:18 am by Jonathan Greene

I have not had a chance to try this, but I am very excited at the prospect of what is offered within the Internet Communications Software Update 2. If you’ve been looking to enhance the presence and messaging options within the default system this looks to be just what the doctor ordered. After installation, you should be able to add any IM account through the main system account options (in Control Panel) which will then work from the presence control.

One caveat of note — you will need to activate “red pill” mode to install. This is not a deal breaker, but you should tread lightly once activated if you fall into the more novice end of things.

Added and updated features
Telepathy-haze

Now you can use nearly all of the great IM services supported by pidgin (formerly known as gaim) open-source application - all from the comfort for your native IM/Voip client in your N8×0 device.

To see the list of services/protocols supported by pidgin, visit: http://www.pidgin.im/. Please note that not all protocols are enabled for now, but they can be added later on.

To use it, simply create your IM account in the device normally and the wizard will let you select the type of service you want (you will see more services listed there).

Telepathy-salut

Be connected to your neighbourhood instantly. This is a link-local instant messaging that requires no external service or server. Your buddy list (roster) will automatically consist of everyone present in the local network. Extremely useful for on-the-spot social networking in parties or conferences :) .

Oh, and it is zero configuration IM. You only set your full name for others to see. To use it, simply create an account using the wizard in and select ‘link-local (xmpp)’ as the service.

Chat log viewer

If you have wished you could see your past chat messages for reference or simply to recall some important information, worry no more. With IMLogViewer application (installed in ‘Extra’ application menu), you will be able to see all your past chat messages exchanged with your friends.
SIP Profiles

There are now some pre-configured SIP profiles for some major providers. This would ease configuring SIP accounts in the device. They are:

  • Ekiga.net
  • FreeWorldDialup
  • Sipphone.com (same as used by gizmo)

Note:You can also create profiles yourself by adding a profile description file (.profile) to the directory /usr/share/osso-rtcom/ (See existing profiles for an example).

I’ll get this installed tonight. If you install and have issues or positive reports to share, please do so in the comments.

But still no progress on implementing “Busy” status?
Yeah, great job. Till one gets fired for sending IM’s to the boss from Nokia while he’s busy…

I meant the Maemo UI team, not RTCOMM (in the previos post).
RTCOMM does a good job, however who needs anything else than XMPP ;)

    Hi Jonathan,

I tried to install rtcom-beta-os2008 on my N800 and get an “Unable to install” warning during the installation (following the install instructions on - http://rtcomm.garage.maemo.org). See image - http://heffo.biz/maemo/images/screenshot01.png - for visual.
So I stopped the installation as when I looked through the details of the install, it says it needs to remove the OS packages (see - http://heffo.biz/maemo/images/screenshot03.png). Didn’t like the sound of that!

    Happy New Year!

    Cheers, Heffo :)

@heffo - did you do the red pill trick? Thought that usually gets that message to suppress…

  6. Heffo said,

@Jonathan - yeah I switched to red pill mode before I started the install. In blue pill mode you don’t get the option to continue the install after you get the “Unable to install” warning. Thanks.

I wonder what the issue is since it worked for Luca above … will have to try this for myself

Anybody know if update 2 will install on 2007HE?

Update 1 worked ok for me.

A little worried to try myself.

    Cheers!

Update 2 will definitely not work on OS2007, it requires OS2008.

Or is it only ohter N800’s?

Would be great if you could as hardly anyone else has N800’s!!

anyone able to get at their buddy list from aim w/o re entering all the screen names into contacts?

The AIM contacts take a longer time to appear for some reason, but they should appear eventually.

    Hi Jonathan,
I had another stab at the install, and got it to work! I still got the “Unable to install” warning during the installation, but this time the details of the install said there were not conflicts so I proceeded.
Just added my AIM contacts list. My contacts downloaded successfully after I disconnected/reconnected to my account. MSN is next.

This is great integration for the N800.

    Thanks, Mark

If one want to speak to me and so open a chat, I have a invitation to chat with it, but I the contact manager, I see my jabber contact but I don’t see msn contact.
    Is it normal?
If a handly add a msn contact I will see it?

    Thanks !

I am not able to see my contact list using the msn protocol. Is this normal? Or is there anything i should do ie import my contacts to get to see them. Just wondering as i would have thought it would automatically download my contacts list.

    Thanks

  17. Heffo said,

    January 9, 2008 at 8:54 am

@Chinedu - after you added the MSN protocol, did you log off and then log on again to your account? If not, do this and your MSN contacts should appear (may take a couple of seconds).

Once your login credentials are correct then it should work fine. Some have said it may talk a while for MSN contacts to download.

Na, shouldn’t take that long. I take it you’ve checked that your MSN credentials are correct i.e. logged into MSN messenger etc.?

Best thing to do is to check out the itT forums for suggestions before adding all your contacts - http://www.internettablettalk.com/. I’d say somebody else has had the same issue as yourself.

I tried this update on my N800, but it ended up screwing up my bluetooth connection and everything I tried I could not get it to pair and connect to my N73, N95 or iGO Keyboard. I really need BT during the day at work and what’s the point of having the iGO keyboard if I can’t use it.
I ended up having to reflash the OS2008 and forget about installing the new upgrade 2, its a shame as I really liked the integrated chat and contacts.
Hopefully they will find a fix for the BT problem and I’ll be able to reinstall again soon.

WOW - I definitely did not see anything like that though it did take two tries to install for some reason. Currently things seem to be working fine on all my IM services.
