OS2008 Diablo Arrives!
While it’s been floating around for a while “behind the scenes” Diablo has finally arrived officially for the tablet:
Nokia has published the OS2008 Feature Upgrade for the N810 and N800 Internet Tablets. This release is based on Maemo 4.1 (codename Diablo) and provides the Seamless Software Update feature.
Users still need to reflash the device in order to install this release. Further OS updates will be made available over-the-air, without needing to reflash. Now users will get automatic notifications in the home screen about the availability of OS updates or single applications, including those installed from third parties. This works only over WLAN connections. It is still possible to check for updates manually from the Application manager.
This release brings a new open source email application based on Modest and the tinymail framework. Users will find a simplified account setup and presets for various service providers. Another major improvement is the introduction to Chinese character rendering support in Email, Browser and RSS feed reader. There are numerous issues fixed all over the operating system including updated openssl. Smaller improvements have also been introduced to several areas such improved browser panning performance. [Maemo.org]
I was just about to mess with screen rotation hacks, but this seems like a slightly more substantial change. I’ll try to report back after flashing today if possible.

I don’t have an N800 series tablet but what appeals to me about this update is how similar some of the functionality is to the newer releases of Ubuntu. There is some awesome stuff coming out of the open source community!

Yaay, Nokia has invented something that was in most of Linux distros for years…

@Lukasz: Still I think it’s the first time we see something like that on an handled.
@Jonathan: I don’t understand, is screen rotation part of the update? I should wait 4 hours and try by myself anyway.

Sorry for any confusion … I was looking at the ITT wiki for a way to rotate the N810’s screen and then learned there was an update. they are unrelated.

Ok
My mistake, I have to practice my english slightly more.
Anyway if you find out that screen rotation is in the update, please mention it, I’m interested

Being new to the world of maemo through my N810 I wonder if this is a multilingual release or just English? I would be in need of a German version but there is no word on the supported/included languages anywhere! Any ideas? Thanks!

I am pretty sure that there is German support. When you first flash you can choose your language and there are quite a few languages supported in the user guides which lead me to believe that the respective native languages are also available.

hope diablo will resolve the on-screen thumboard issues in os2008. i love os2008 but have been seriously tempted to downgrade to os2007 just because of its very usable thumboard.

I’ve read about some fixes to the onscreen keyboard (not sure what they are specifically) as well as already noticing that things are smoother in the browser and in general the system is more responsive. The apps manager also proactively tells you when there are updates and lets you update multiple things at once.

@atmasphere
the thumboard problems (inability to invoke it by a finger tap and inaccuracy) really drove me crazy. i stayed with os2008 just for the sole reason of a better flash support and xournal. currently i am fooling around with my dad’s asus eee pc 900 and see a lot of advantages of having an n800 over the eee. with this new upgrade the n800 is going to be even more valuable to me. :)…

I love the idea of the ASUS as well actually, but it does not fit in my pocket …
